Lyre vs Replit: a hosted workspace or a project on your computer

Replit is a hosted browser workspace where you can build and publish an app in its cloud; Lyre runs coding agents on a project that already lives on your computer and connects paired devices to that work.

Who each workflow fits

These products solve different problems. Replit brings the environment, app services and hosting into its own cloud. Lyre keeps the project on your machine and adds device access around the agent you already use.

Lyre may fit when you…

  • Already have a project folder on your computer and want it to stay there.
  • Already use Claude Code, Codex, Copilot, OpenCode or another supported agent and want one workspace for them.
  • Want to check progress, answer approvals and review changes from a phone or another computer.
  • Want interactive app previews and App-only sharing alongside the coding session.
  • Do not need a hosted database, authentication service or hosting bundle.

Replit may fit when you…

  • Want to go from a prompt to a running app in a hosted browser workspace.
  • Want the database, authentication and publishing handled in the same product.
  • Want to work from a device without keeping your own computer awake and reachable.
  • Want Replit’s own Agent and deployment workflow rather than connecting a separate coding agent.

QuestionLyreReplit
What it isA local-first workspace around coding-agent CLIs, project files, terminals and interactive app previews.A hosted cloud development environment with a browser workspace, its own Agent and publishing tools.
Primary workspaceThe Lyre desktop app on your computer, plus phone, browser or another-computer clients connected to that host.A browser workspace hosted by Replit, plus the mobile app Replit documents.
Where the work runsThe project and agent processes run on the selected host computer, which must stay awake and reachable.Projects, editor and Agent run in Replit cloud infrastructure, so an ordinary browser can reach them from another device.
Starting a new appYou start from a folder or repository you own, or ask a coding agent to scaffold one, then preview it locally.Replit documents starting from a prompt with its Agent and continuing in the same workspace, subject to its current product and plan.
Database, auth and hostingLyre does not supply a hosted database, authentication service or hosting. You keep your own stack and deploy it with your own tools.Replit documents built-in database, authentication and deployment features for apps built in its environment. Check its current documentation and plan terms.
Existing project and agent choiceOpen the folder where the project already lives and connect Claude Code, Codex, GitHub Copilot, OpenCode, Pi, Antigravity or Muse Code. You can import or start projects in Replit and use its Agent. Language, dependency and provider support follow Replit documentation.
Devices and accessA paired phone or browser client reaches the host, limited to approved projects and permissions. One running app can be shared with App-only access.A browser can reach the hosted workspace from another device, and Replit documents a mobile app. Access follows your Replit account and plan.

Replit facts above were checked against replit.com and docs.replit.com in October 2026, may change. A longer list is not a score; the right choice depends on where the project should live and who needs to reach it.

When Replit is the better choice

  • You want a hosted prompt-to-app workflow where the database, authentication, hosting and publishing live in one product.
  • You want to open the workspace in a browser on a device that is not your own computer.
  • You want Replit's own Agent rather than bringing your own coding agent CLI.
  • You do not need the project to remain a folder on your own machine.

If that describes your work, use Replit. Lyre is not that product and does not try to replace its hosted app services.

When Lyre is the better choice

Choose Lyre when the project already exists on your computer and you want it to stay there. The computer is the host: it holds the files and runs the agent. A paired phone or browser client reaches that host under its permissions, and an interactive preview can run beside the conversation.

Lyre does not make an AI model reliable and it is not a sandbox. The agent runs with your computer's permissions, and prompts and project context go to the provider you configure.

Questions people ask before choosing

Is Lyre a hosted app builder like Replit?

No. Lyre is a workspace that runs coding agents and interactive app previews from a project on your own computer. It does not supply a hosted database, authentication service or hosting. If you want a hosted prompt-to-app builder, Replit is the more direct fit.

Do I have to move my project into Lyre?

No. Open the folder where it already lives on your computer. The project files stay there, and prompts and project context go to the AI provider you configure.

Can I use Replit and Lyre on the same project?

You can keep Replit for a hosted app and open a separate local checkout in Lyre. Do not point two agents at the same working files at once; use one agent at a time or separate Git worktrees.

Can I continue from my phone?

Yes, through a paired phone or browser client connected to the host. The host must stay awake and reachable, and its permissions decide what the client can do. Remote viewing has a plan allowance on Free.

What happens when my computer is asleep or offline?

The agent and project live on that computer, so a sleeping or offline host cannot continue the work. Replit runs in its own cloud environment, so a browser can reach it without your computer running.
